This just in: President Biden to reopen ACA Marketplace, announces three-month special enrollment period

Today, President Biden signed an executive order aimed at strengthening Medicaid and the Affordable Care Act (ACA). This executive order includes a provision to create a COVID-19 special enrollment period (SEP), something the Trump administration opted not to do. This SEP will run from February 15, 2021 to May 15, 2021 and gives uninsured Americans the opportunity to enroll for a health plan even if they don’t have a qualifying life event. This COVID-19 SEP will apply to all 36 states who use HealthCare.gov, which includes California.

President Biden pledges to expedite delivery of COVID-19 vaccines to states

Under increasing pressure to speed up the pace of coronavirus vaccination, President Biden announced that his administration was nearing a deal with two manufacturers that would supply enough vaccinations to have 300 million Americans vaccinated by the end of summer. Supplies to states will begin increasing by 16% next week, and states will now have three week’s advance notice of how many doses they will get. Experts state that the administration should try to lock in as many doses of the vaccine as it could now, even if the vaccines will arrive later in the year.

More people now want the COVID-19 vaccine as soon as possible, fewer want to wait and see

Reluctance to get the COVID-19 vaccine is waning, according to a new KFF poll released last week. Nearly 50% of adults surveyed in January said they have already been vaccinated or plan on getting the vaccine as soon as they can, which indicates an increase from the 33% of adults who shared this sentiment back in December. This survey also found that people are more likely to want the vaccination when they know someone close to them who has been vaccinated. Since distribution of the first COVID-19 vaccines began in December, about 20 million Americans have been vaccinated. The pace of vaccination also seems to be increasing.
