Anthem Clarification: No Special Open Enrollment Period Needed for Bronze Plans Sold or Renewed Effective May 1st

Anthem previously reported that they are offering a Special Enrollment Period for 2020 Bronze Plans. Since that announcement, Anthem provided clarification regarding Bronze Plan changes. Bronze Plan benefit changes will only affect plans that were sold or renewed with an effective date of May 1, 2020, and after.

Anthem also advised that there will be no mid-year benefit changes for groups that were sold or renewed between January 2020 and April 2020. As a result, Anthem will no longer offer special enrollment for these groups. Anthem will also send communications to their members and groups to clarify any confusion regarding Bronze Plan changes and the SEP.

Insurers Pledge to Provide Free Coronavirus Tests

This week, major insurers pledged to cover coronavirus testing costs. But testing is only part of the equation. Insurers cannot guarantee the availability of testing, and testing is only part of diagnosing and treating a patient.

Vice President Michael Pence stated that industry representatives agreed that coronavirus tests would be covered at no additional cost to patients and that CEOs also agreed to no surprise billing associated with testing. In order to fully guarantee that surprise billing will not be an issue, the White House might have to get buy-in from hospitals and doctors, who are the ones who send these bills.
